Burlington Beauties

By Kellie Speed
Members of The House of LeMay apply high gloss before a performance.

Members of The House of LeMay drag performance troupe have become part of the fabric of Burlington, VT. First-time filmmaker Russell Dreher discusses the importance of documenting their story.

When Russell Dreher set out to make his first full length film in 2006, he had no idea the roller coaster ride to completion would include unemployment, cancer, and drag queens. As the director of Slingbacks and Syrup, Dreher focused the story on the adventures of the documentary’s subjects, a “family” of comedic drag queens living in the rural state of Vermont.

Speculating on Five Feature Length Screenplays

N/A (Union & Non-Union)

ACID TONGUE is an urban thriller about a strip club bartender struggling to cope with intense feelings of rage and disillusionment. In the mold of NAKED or TAXI DRIVER.
THE BALANCING GAME is a story of two psychiatrists & two rivals. Their rivalry is completely one-sided until one fateful night changes everything. This is a dark, perverse, devious story with shades of Stanley Kubrick and Samuel Beckett.
THE INFILTRATORS is an unconventional horror film with an important message about this country’s red state vs. blue state mentality.

Archiving a Presidential Campaign

By Julia Cox
Howard Dean (right) speaks with director Heath Eiden (left) at his first fundraiser in Stowe, Vermont.

Heath Eiden sold 16 acres of Vermont soil to make his political documentary, Dean and Me: Roadshow of an American Primary, screening this month at the Somewhat North of Boston (SNOB) Film Festival.

Heath Eiden, director and co-producer of Dean and Me: Roadshow of an American Primary, loaded up his car and followed Vermont Governor Howard Dean on the campaign trail for the 2004 presidency. It was only patriotic, says Eiden. He laughs as he admits this, knowing that, especially lately, it’s a loaded word: a reality that attests to the timely release of his film. After six years of fulfilling his patriotic duty, from poring over footage to struggling to find the money to finish the piece, the documentary is finally complete.

Cast:
Michal Dean, Honor Norwood
Year of Release:
2003
Plot/Description:
Using a distinctive blend of computer animation, digital video and 8mm film shot entirely on location in Vermont and Western Massachusetts, 7 TO 10 DAYS is a gripping medical drama that takes a compassionate, eye-opening look into the lives of everyday people dealing with chronic illness, while raising important questions about the possible role of environmental issues in viral outbreaks. The film tells the story of Simone Juarez and Neal Goldman, a young man with the Epstein-Barr virus, a chronic disease that attacks the immune system, putting him at risk for opportunistic infections. On a road trip through Southern Vermont's pristine Green Mountains the couple camp in what they believe to be an unspoiled wilderness. After a kayaking accident, Neal develops a strange rash and slight fever. When his symptoms take a sudden, severe turn for the worse the couple enlists the help of a local naturopathic physician Dr. Jody Noé in an attempt to discover the true nature of Neal's illness. As Neal is rapidly swept away on the tide of his sickness he is checked into a local hospital where Simone must engage in a battle of wills with the unsympathetic doctors, a battle that quickly escalates into a desperate attempt to save her lover's life, and her own.

The New Face of Vermont

By Emily Jansen
A still from "This New Life: Refugees and the Changing Face of Vermont."

Filmmakers Sienna McLean and Peter Logreco seek to portray the multi-cultural shift of Vermont in their new documentary "This New Life: Refugees and the Changing Face of Vermont."

The country life of Vermont is not exactly what comes to mind when one hears the phrase "melting pot." However, this may soon be challenged by the emergence of a "new" Vermont, one that is more culturally and racially diverse than ever before.

Filmmaking on the Edge

David Giancola behind the camera on an Edgewood Studios' production.

Edgewood Studios produces star-studded action flicks for TV and video in the unlikely town of Rutland, Vermont.

A light dusting of snow covered Edgewood Studios when I visited in mid April...inside and out. "The fake stuff...it’s tough to get rid of," explained David Giancola, Edgewood’s resident director and co-founder, "but it’s mostly gone now." Shooting had recently wrapped for Edgewood’s newest feature film, called "Trapped," which starts, among others, Beverly Hill 90210’s oldest teen, Gabrielle Carteris, as well as Jack Wagner. It’s about a family trapped in a ski chalet, and it required a load of snow, real and fake.

Celebrating Vermont Indies

By Amy Souza
"My Mother's Early Lovers" aired as part of the new series.

Vermont Public Television's new series "Reel Independents" gives local filmmakers air time.

When Nora Jacobson’s film, "My Mother’s Early Lovers," aired on WGBH this year, one viewer taped it off the air and mailed a VHS copy to his cousin living in Vermont. The gritty film, about a young woman who discovers her mother’s diary and the secrets contained within, made the film festival circuit and picked up a number of awards along the way. And though the film was made in Vermont--and is set there, too--it didn’t show on Vermont Public Television (VPT) until months after it appeared on WGBH.

"In Jest"

A photo of the teens who made "In Jest."

A review of the film by Vermont teens in the 1998 Fledgling Film Screenwriting Workshop

"In Jest" was written and performed by the teenage participants in the 1998 Fledgling Film Screenwriting Workshop, so you would of course expect it to have more than its fair share of sophomoric humor -- juvenile attempts at sexual appeal, multiple crude incidents involving cows, and the like. And "In Jest" doesn’t let us down in this regard. Nor does its story, featuring a grab-bag of teens in a small Vermont town, overwhelm us with drama. Far from it. There is a rather lackadaisical attitude toward plot; the movie read more...

Demystifying Media for Youth

By Amy Souza
A group gathers at Club Media to 'deconstruct' media.

Club Media in Vermont serves up a unique alternative to traditional summer camp -- complete with making movies and analyzing media.

Tell a kid he’s going to spend two weeks in August deconstructing media and you’ll probably get a puzzled look, if not an outright groan. But tell her she gets to make her own movie too and watch her jump.

Every year, scores of American children head to summer camp. Last summer, 26 kids in Colchester, Vermont spent two weeks at Club Media--day camp that combines hands-on production techniques with classroom teaching about media literacy.

Black History Month Film Series

By Gina Harris

A film series in Vermont finds Black History Month an opportunity to share some of the stories that define the black experience.

As a film reviewer and enthusiast, I've witnessed some very powerful stories on the silver screen. There have been moments, sitting in the dark, I have been transfigured. You become part of a pulse, part of an idea, part of humanity. The lights come up. The audience filters out. A loud, manly cough may hide tears not allowed to fall. Women, red-nosed and sniffling, convene in the bathroom to talk about how wonderful it was. There is a connection.
