Last month, the second annual Boston Palestine Film Festival commemorated the Nakba and celebrated Palestinian culture through the medium of film. The Boston Palestine Film Festival opened with an intense set of films on October 4th at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston. The festival, in its second year, screened over 60 films in seven venues throughout the Greater Boston area to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Nakba, the beginning of the Palestinian refugee crisis spawned by the 1948 Palestine War. At the MFA, the presentation was decidedly unfussy, and the films were preceded by a serious discussion of the film, Maria’s Grotto. read more...A New Generation of Jewish Film ProgrammingSat, 11/01/2008 - 00:00 – erin

Twenty-seven years and running, the Boston Society of Film Critics hosts its first public awards ceremony. When critics, filmmakers, film lovers, and Frank Langella crowded into the Brattle Theater on January 20th -- braving the coldest day of the year so far -- there wasn’t talk of the writer’s strike, the cancelled Golden Globes, or the hordes of paparazzi that so frequently flank ceremonies of this ilk -- except, perhaps, when Langella thanked the Boston Society of Film Critics (BSFC) for naming him best actor and overlooking “the juggernaut of Daniel Day Lewis and George Clooney.” read more...The Inaugural Bangor Film Festival and 28-Eighty Film ShootoutTue, 01/01/2008 - 01:00 – meek

A report from the field at the European Psychoanalytic Film Festival and Boston’s Off the Couch series. Why do we love the movies so much? Why do certain stories or characters stay
with us to be evoked days, sometimes years later? What makes us use movies as
anchors of reference for personal experience or points of departure for creative
endeavors? Why do we prefer to sit in a darkened, dreamlike theatre rather than
with a DVD in our own home? How do movies interweave with our own personal
histories and arouse deep and powerful identifications that get absorbed

Two cameras. A dozen crew members. Three packs of Twizzlers. Endless cups of coffee. One looong weekend. The 48 Hour Film Project hits Boston. When Improv Boston's Will Luera called me in April to offer me the chance to purge my filmmaking chops of years of rust and stunted ideas, I was totally flattered and emphatically interested. Sure, I went to film school (well, film studies, if you want to get technical), but besides a brief stint in wedding videography and a few weekend gigs as an art department assistant, my post-graduate filmmaking career was pretty short-lived and decidedly unglamorous. So I jumped at the chance to take Will up on his offer; to write a read more... |
