Documentary filmmaker and Emmy winner, Stanley Nelson, talks about his latest film Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple, screening at the Martha's Vineyard International Film Festival.When you look at Stanley Nelson’s accomplishments it seems unfair to refer to him as just a filmmaker. Nelson is a 2002 MacArthur "genius" Fellow who has used film to give voice to important issues that were overlooked by popular culture. The newly formed Rhode Island Film Collaborative works to unite local filmmakers and build strong ties within the community.What happens when an organized group of enthusiastic New Englander’s pool their resources, talent, and time? The answer is: they win an award for local filmmakers at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. This August 2006, the Rhode Island Film Collaborative (RIFC) won the Providence Film Festival for local filmmakers of Rhode Island grand prize for their short film, "The Daydream." After 18 years as an engineer, Todd Davis decided to change his career and went to film school at Boston University. Now he’s a filmmaker traveling the festival circuit with his short film, In the Tradition of My Family. Next stop: Boston Film Night.The film is a drama about a father/son relationship in a family with an unusual legacy of violence. It has won several awards including Best Narrative Short at the Philadelphia Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Short at the D.C. Independent Film Festival. The film will be shown at the Boston Film Night on September 17th at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, MA. Davis spoke to NewEnglandFilm.com recently from the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
