The Making of...the New England Film & Video Festival

What started as a small festival in Northhampton, MA back in 1976 has since blossomed into a competitive showcase for regional independent film. Here, NEFVF Managing Director Devon Damonte talks about his contribution to the festival, what he’s worked on in the past, and this year's films.

What started as a small festival in Northhampton, MA back in 1976 has since blossomed into a competitive showcase for regional independent film. The festival’s goals, however, remain the same – to give audiences access to a diverse body of work by independent and student video and filmmakers, and to provide artists with an opportunity for audience, media and industry exposure.

In a way, this is nothing new. It’s the familiar tale of a woman with the wrong man, with Mr. Right standing by. But mostly this film is not a romance; it’s the portrayal of a setting. It’s the struggle of a neighborhood turned schizophrenic – home to both briefcase-toting urbanites and old world Mafiosos – that we know as the North End.

Flora Cohen is the writer, producer and director of Lemonade in October, winner of the 23rd annual New England Film and Video Festival's award for Best Experimental Narrative. Ms. Cohen studied film at NYU before beginning her career as an independent filmmaker. Her company Tough Love Films, is based in Florence, Massachusetts.
