Miss India Georgia

This engaging documentary takes us through the preparation of four young Indian-American women competing in the Atlanta, Georgia Miss India Georgia beauty pageant. Each of the four women struggle with the conflict of their past heritage and their present surroundings. I especially found it interesting and ironic that the girls’ earnest effort to assimilate into American society led them to compete in a beauty pageant – one of the basest parts of our culture. However, filmmakers Sharon Grimberg (from Cambridge, Massachusetts) and Daniel Friedman never intrude their opinions into the film – so much so, that I couldn’t even decipher their moral take on beauty pageants. Nevertheless, the experiences of Nisha, Anu, Misty and Mini – sometimes sad, often humorous – give us a glimpse into the tension that they face by living within two conflicting cultures.
