How and Where to get Headshots... A Late Answer

Hi Conan,

This is probably waaaaaay too late for you, but you can find lots of headshot photographers online by doing a little google work.

I find the best way to go about getting a headshot is to do a little research first. Look at the roles you are planning on going for. If you are planning on auditioning for comedies, take a look at what other people are doing for their headshots. If you want to be considered for serious drama, what kind of headshots are those actors using?

Once you have done that, then you can start looking at photographers' portfolios and see which ones may be better for the look you want.

After that, pick up the phone and have a conversation with the photog about what you want to achieve. It's an interview to see if you like their philosophy and mind set toward your goal.

A few things to remember:
- There is no one headshot for all roles. Different headshots may be more effective for certain auditions or less for others.
- A headshot is a marketing tool designed to get attention in a professional way, not in a school portrait or vacation snap way.
- A headshot needs to be current to be effective. If you cut 4 inches off your hair, lost 15 pounds or have changed in some other, noticable way, the casting directors want to see a new picture, not one from 2 years ago.

A headshot session should be fun. It's an opportunity to practice a character. An audition without the pressure of a casting director standing out there somewhere in the dark.

Good luck! And, be sure to put me on that list of photographers you are gonna call! ;-)
