Filming in Connecticut

Researched and written by Lauren Folden

Connecticut’s once small film industry has grown quickly since the inception of its film production tax credit in 2006, not unlike the incentives passed in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The state’s incentive has been highly ranked and is now drawing some of New York’s film industry. In addition, Connecticut is easier and cheaper to film in than other New England states along with easily procurable (and sometimes free) filming permits. Also sure to be an enticement is Connecticut’s variety of location options. From its metropolitan areas and a coastline on the Long Island Sound and Atlantic Ocean, to eastern pastoral settings and collegiate offerings, the state possesses multiple options within close proximity.

Site Location

Connecticut appeals to filmmakers for its scenic diversity. It has a spectacular coastline of charming maritime towns and stunning vistas, bucolic hill and dale in the Northwestern area of Litchfield Hills, and the metropolitan selection of cities like Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport, its most populous city. In addition, classic collegiate campuses, colonial churches, and lighthouses are abundant and easily accessible. Finally, as the closest state to New York city, Connecticut has a unique ability to draw productions northward
Permits The Connecticut Film division assists film-production crews in acquiring permits for various Connecticut locations. Some cities, like Norwalk, may even provide permits without a fee.

Police Assistance

Police assistance is not necessary in many Connecticut locations, but if a police detail is needed, contact the Connecticut State Police Office.

Tax Credits

In 2006, Connecticut established a tax credit to bolster their in-state film industry by allowing productions spending at least $50,000 to receive a credit on up to 30% of their costs on all goods, services, and labor. See the official Digital Media and Motion Picture Tax Credit Guidelines for a list of eligibility requirements and submit an application to the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism, Film Division.
